Big Sur, California

It's getting cold in California I guess I'll be leaving soon

Prior to Yosemite I spent (not enough) time in and around Monterey Bay.  South of Monterey the coast begins to get interesting, and the road becomes more fun than any road should be to drive.  ...fast slow, fast fast slow, sometimes a wide turn, sometimes a quick one...

Bixby Creek Bridge on the California coast with cliffs, ocean, and cloudy sky.

Between the semi-sprawl of Monterey and the over-quaint town of Carmel is the self important 17 mile drive.  On its coast is the extremely photogenic lone cypress, arguably (if you listen to them) the most photographed tree in existence, one that comes equipped with its own viewpoint, rocky ledge, parking lot, tour bus drop off and copyright infringement warning.

Sign with text and a green pine tree graphic. The sign states: "Lone Cypress, a trademark of quality. Lone Cypress is the corporate logo and trademark of Pebble Beach Company. As such, the use of the tree's image is regulated by law. Photographs or art renderings of the Lone Cypress for commercial or promotional purposes cannot be taken or created without written permission from Pebble Beach Company. Photographs and art renderings for personal use only are welcomed."

The pride of Monterey and probably the best aquarium in existence, where the sardines cruelly have no choice but to circle around endlessly on top of each other in full view of apathetic strangers until the curators arbitrarily decide to replace them with new sardines.  It sucks to be them.

A large display of small fish inside a glass tank at an indoor market or store.

From the south side of my fifth or sixth favorite bridge in North America (I have a bias toward local bridges), as a late afternoon shadow slides across the bay and slowly into night.

View of San Francisco Bay from the Golden Gate Bridge, showing the bridge's red railing, shadow, water, and distant hills.

From the outfield of my new favorite baseball stadium, with views of the south bay, the other bridge, the giant Coca-Cola bottle slide.  From my seat in the AAA Club Level I watched the local, expatriate Giants lose terribly to the Arizona Diamondbacks as sailboats danced just beyond right field.

A baseball stadium filled with spectators with a grassy field in the foreground, giant Coke bottle and popcorn balloon attractions in the background, and people standing near the seating area.
